Abstract
Description
On February 6, 1893, it will be 30 years since the Kansas State Agricultural College was founded and located. For a new State, and one that made history as fast as the trans-Missourian countries did, this is a long period. Many of the men to whose energy the people of Kansas owe this magnificent institution of learning-the largest agricultural school in the world-have left to conquer other Territories, some have followed more remunerative or attractive callings than that of the educator of farmers' sons and farmers' daughters, and many have died. The close of the century may find but few of the pioneers in health and vigor. If a history including the valuable element of personal recollection was to be written, the work could not be deferred much longer. The author believes that the facts related in this history are sufficient to give those who may interest themselves in the College a fairly complete and entirely truthful picture of its development and growth; more than this is not intended. An active participation for over 16 years in the work of the Faculty as one of its members, a persistent effort for over half of this time to obtain the necessary data, and a personal acquaintance with nearly all the men named, ought to give some weight to statements that may conflict with other versions or views. -- Manhattan, Kas., January, 1893.
