| dc.description.abstract | Historically, diversification has been viewed as a key strategy for reducing farm financial risk and stabilizing year-to-year variability in net farm income. However, since the mid-1990s, consolidation spurred by enterprise specialization has been a defining trend for the U.S. farm sector. This raises an important question. To what degree has specialization overtaken diversification as a means of risk reduction? Using Kansas Farm Management Association data from 1973 to 2024, one-year rolling regression models estimated for 10-year periods of data were used to examine the evolving relationship between specialization and farm financial performance. The analysis accounts for regional differences and evaluates the effects of specialization alongside other key factors, including economies of scale, financial leverage, operator age, expense efficiency, and government payments. Results indicate that farms have increasingly specialized over time and that greater specialization is associated with higher returns, improved financial efficiency, and lower variability in income. Larger farms also tend to generate higher and less volatile returns. Expense efficiency emerges as the most important factor affecting financial risk and performance over the 51-year period, though its relative influence declines in recent years. Government payments increasingly contribute to farm profitability but appear less effective more recently as a risk-reduction tool than in earlier periods of the analysis. Overall, the findings suggest that specialization and consolidation have contributed to improved financial performance and stability in modern production agriculture. | |
