Abstract

Beginning string method books are prolific in the string music education world, and numerous studies have researched and analyzed the effectiveness and utility of those books in the classroom. There is currently a lack of research on level three string method books, both in analysis of content and comparisons to existing curriculum to assess utility. The[RG1.1] purpose of this study is to analyze two level three method books, compare them to the established ASTA String Curriculum, and create a tool for string teachers to apply these available resources in their own curriculum. Two method books were selected, Sound Innovations: Sound Development – Intermediate String Orchestra and Habits for a Successful Middle Level Musician. The books were evaluated based on content, compared to each other, and organized to highlight correlations to the ASTA String Curriculum categories, content areas, and learning targets. This [RG2.1]analysis also identified the level of skills included in each book to determine alignment with the ASTA String Curriculum developing or proficient levels. Once the two books were evaluated, strong relationships to the developing category were clear, and many of the exercises addressed right- and left-hand skills which correspond to the ASTA Category 1 (Executive Skills and Knowledge). Category 3 (Artistic Skills and Knowledge) had extremely limited representation in both books, representing some potential gaps in potential utility. Both books also had unequal skill representation across instruments, which could limit the application of skills in an ensemble setting. The included results, discussion, and appendices intended to serve as a foundation for teachers to understand the skills offered in each book, determine if there is application to their class curriculum, and empower them to use resources that bolster student technique and skills in executive, musical, and artistic ways.
