Field Librarianship in den USA. Bestandsaufnahme und Zukunftsperspektiven

Title: Field Librarianship in den USA. Bestandsaufnahme und Zukunftsperspektiven

Authors: Askey, Dale

Abstract: Discusses the development and implementation of the field librarian concept in the United States. Field librarians are those that spend a significant portion of their work time outside the confines of a library, typically located within other academic buildings closer to the faculty and students they serve. The current state of this trend is analyzed, and a brief discussion of future prospects is offered. Due to the expense of offering such services on a broad scale, the scalability of the model is questioned.

Revitalizing a mentoring program for academic librarians

Title: Revitalizing a mentoring program for academic librarians

Authors: Farmer, Diana; Stockham, Marcia; Trussell, Alice

Abstract: Many new employees naturally seek out coworkers and informal advisors as a way of learning about their new positions and organizations. However, a formalized mentoring program is a way to meet the needs of new employees and effectively impart the information and advice in a coordinated, ongoing process. This paper focuses on the process of revitalizing a formalized mentoring program in an academic library. Included are details of the process developed by one institution, an extensivebibliography, sample checklists, and assessment tools.

Title: We love open source software. No, you can’t have our code

Authors: Askey, Dale

Abstract: Librarians are among the strongest proponents of open source software. Paradoxically, libraries are also among the least likely to actively contribute their code to open source projects. This article identifies and discusses six main reasons this dichotomy exists and offers ways to get around them.
